Common Questions

Everything you need to know about asbestos removal

How do I check if a company is licensed?
Every company in our directory is verified against the HSE CONIAC register. You can also check directly at coniac.org.uk. It is a criminal offence to carry out licensable asbestos work without an HSE licence.
What types of asbestos licence are there?
The HSE issues three types: Standard Licence for full asbestos removal, Scaffolding Licence for scaffolding in contaminated environments, and Maintenance Licence for maintenance involving asbestos. All require fully trained and medically assessed workers.
How much does asbestos removal cost?
Residential asbestos removal typically costs £950–£3,750 depending on type and quantity. Garage roof removal runs £900–£1,100. Artex ceiling removal in a 3-bed house can cost £4,500–£6,500. Commercial projects can exceed £500,000. Always get at least three quotes from licensed contractors.
Do I always need a licensed contractor?
Licensable work (sprayed coatings, pipe lagging, loose fill, insulating board) must be done by an HSE-licensed contractor. Notifiable Non-Licensed Work like large-scale textured coatings must be notified to the HSE. Non-licensed work (asbestos cement in good condition, floor tiles) requires trained workers but no HSE licence.
How do I know if my property contains asbestos?
Any UK building constructed before 2000 may contain asbestos. Common locations include artex ceilings, pipe insulation, floor tiles, garage roofs, and boiler flues. The only way to confirm is through an asbestos survey by a UKAS-accredited surveyor. Never disturb suspected asbestos material yourself.
